Over the past five seasons, we have been actively encouraging orchids across the Whitley Bay GC site via holistic grass thinning exercises. Our rough management programme is firstly aimed at golf play (ease of ball finding, speed of play etc.), however, a side effect of this is we now have a collection of orchids which number into their thousands! Common-spotted, northern and hybrid orchids can now be found in our roughs, this past year has seen the scarce bee orchid appear and who knows what'll turn up next year? The outcome of our turf maintenance is that we now have a large collection of protected and beautiful wildflowers.
