Wetland habitat left alone to flourish

A wetland on the edge of the golf course continues to mature and attract a diverse wildlife population. The wetland is the result of a small pond created by a dam placed at the end of an open drain. The pond was initially used to provide a supplementary source of irrigation water to the golf course; however, water extraction was discontinued three years ago, and the pond - and its shallow banks - was allowed to grow naturally with beneficial reeds and grasses. A buffer zone, adjacent to the drains leading to the pond, has been left unfertilised resulting in a more diverse habitat for wildlife. Growth of trees and debris blocking drains leading to the pond will be monitored and maintained as necessary with all work carried out outside the nesting season.
