Utilizing native prairie grasses in low maintenance areas

TPC Colorado

United States

Our facility was built in 2017 and all of our low maintenance areas were planted to fine fescue blend. However, over time it became apparent that our climate on the front range of Colorado was too harsh for this monostand of fescue to flourish.

In 2022, we decided to research which grass types were being used for prairie and pasture grasses locally. Our findings led to us changing the blend of grasses we use in our low maintenance areas to a mix of bluestems, brome grasses, fescues, and broom sedge.

In the first 18 months our low maintenance areas have been much more vibrant and required fewer inputs that previous. Over time we will continue to interseed with the hopes that the stand becomes completely self sufficient, with no inputs!
