Killarney Golf and Fishing Club has successfully completed an environmentally responsible upgrade to its fishing Lagoon, located on the shores of Lough Leane in the heart of Killarney National Park. This project reflects the club's strong commitment to sustainability by safeguarding the health of the lake's ecosystem for future generations. A central focus of the upgrade was the use of sustainable materials that would have minimal impact on the environment.
The existing railway sleepers, which had been treated with creosote—a harmful chemical—were replaced with limestone and Liscannor stone. The creosote had been leaching toxic substances into the water over time, potentially harming aquatic life. By replacing these sleepers, the club is protecting the lake's delicate ecosystem. The materials chosen for the upgrade do not negatively impact the lake’s natural pH or water quality, making them ideal choices for long-lasting, eco-friendly construction. During the construction process, the club took special care to protect the water quality of Lough Leane. Silt traps made from mypex, a non-toxic polypropylene membrane, were used to capture any sediment disturbed during the works.
