Turf reduction at Laranjal

Quinta do Lago - Laranjal Course

Portugal

The Laranjal Golf Course is set within a vale of Orange and Avocado Groves inside the Ria Formosa Nature Reserve, Algarve and is unique in the region for its incorporation of these trees in the 18 hole layout.

It is also unique in the way the course is routed, and for a modern course, it follows a very traditional layout of 18 holes intertwined in one portion of land rather than golf corridors through real estate.

These wide turf corridors, separated by mature pine trees, have given us the opportunity to reduce turf and create a more natural setting in between holes. We have a target to reduce our maintained turfgrass areas by 3.5 hectares. This will create a saving of irrigation water, reducing our use of non-renewable fuels and reduce workhours mowing and working around trees, whilst maintaining a high level of playability.
