An existing turf nursery, which had become overgrown and used as a dumping ground, was successfully renovated using recycled materials.
Soil from house extension projects in North Berwick, excess material from an on-site facility development, and spoil from on-course projects were repurposed for the renovation.
The site was cleared to a depth of 300mm, and approximately 4,200 tonnes of material were screened to 10mm. Of the screened material, 3,200 tonnes were spread across the half-hectare site with 1000 tonnes of surplus material. New valve-in-head sprinklers and pipework were installed in-house, with training provided by irrigation contractors.
Contractors then prepared, fertilized, and seeded the area using a blend of fescue, with germination occurring within two weeks. A year and a half after achieving full coverage, the nursery is now utilized for on-course projects, including bunker revetting and small turfing tasks. This has resulted in significant cost savings by reducing the need to purchase turf.
