Improvements to drainage over the years have led to the one natural pond drying out during long periods of warm weather, discouraging water based species. Additionally, adjacent land which does have natural water is heavily used by anglers and other human leisure pursuits, further discouraging wildlife. A previously plain, damp and unused area of rough without significant character or wildlife was chosen to create a pond and planted out with appropriate flora.
The benefits have quickly become apparent with families of waterfowl, insects, amphibians and birdlife reappearing, alongside wetland flora, and a previously unattractive piece of the course is developing into a favourite spot. This initiative complements others undertaken by the club, such as 70 maintained bird boxes, a protected and managed wildflower meadow, and several "bug hotels."
