Swift nest box added to Clubhouse

The Honourable Company Of Edinburgh Golfers Muirfield

Scotland

Muirfield was kindly donated a swift nest box by one of its members in January 2023. The decision was made to install the box in the eaves at the rear of the clubhouse, providing a safe and suitable nesting site for these remarkable birds. Swift populations have been in decline in recent years due to habitat loss, making conservation efforts increasingly important. By adding this nest box, Muirfield aims to support the local swift population and contribute to the conservation of the species.

Swifts offer several benefits to golf courses, particularly in controlling insect populations. Their diet consists of flying insects such as moths, beetles, and midges, which are often found in abundance on golf courses. By naturally reducing these pests, swifts help maintain a healthy, balanced ecosystem while minimising the need for chemical pest control.
