Sustainable course restoration in action

Askernish Golf Club

Scotland

Written by: Allan MacDonald

Golf course consultant Gordon Irvine MG, along with a team of volunteer greenkeepers from various locations across the UK, traveled to South Uist to assist the golf club team in repositioning the 13th hole. During the visit, Gordon identified an area that he believed to be one of the original Old Tom Morris greens. All work on the green was carried out manually, using only materials sourced onsite and in accordance with our habitat management plan, ensuring the preservation of all original features and ecology.

The existing 13th putting surface was repurposed for this new green site, while the entire previous 13th hole will be restored to its natural state as native machair land. This restoration will provide additional winter grazing grounds for the Askernish crofting township.
