In 2010, we began a grazing programme for a flock of ‘Kempische Heidesheep’ from a local shepherd. This type of ecological landscape management was specially selected so that the rough could be kept under control. The main objective was the development of a greater bio-diversity and the careful management of the spread of sea buckthorn. An additional advantage is that the game of golf speeds up as balls can be found more easily; the programme has been a big success. During the first few years the grazing period lasted for around two weeks of the year, and now the project has developed so successfully that only about half this period is needed. The overall conclusion is that keeping the rough under control in this way is beneficial and that the grazing programme which we have now got used to will be continued.
