Weeds are an ongoing nuisance in all formal settings; golf courses, sports grounds and landscape gardens all suffer from the never-ending battle against encroaching weeds. In Quinta do Lago we operate QFarm, where herbs and vegetables are grown organically to provide for our restaurants and food outlets.
To grow these crops organically, we have relied heavily on time and manual labour to weed in between rows and ensure precious water and nutrients that we apply go to the plants. Recently we have employed a new technique using boiling water mixed with an organic foam to control the weeds without damaging the crops or soil fauna that live in the beds. This helps to keep our pesticide use to an absolute minimum while saving our farmer's backs!
