Somerset Rare Plants Group survey of dune grasslands

Burnham & Berrow Golf Club

England

The golf courses at Burnham and Berrow Golf Club lie within Berrow Dunes Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) which is designated for its wide range of coastal habitats which includes salt marsh, fore, grey and yellow dunes, stable dune grassland, dune slacks, scrub and a freshwater lagoon. Within the SSSI, 272 plant species have been recorded including two nationally rare and ten with a restricted distribution in the UK.

Somerset Rare Plants Group undertakes visits on an annual basis to record the different plants within Berrow Dunes, including on the golf courses. In 2021, Somerset Rare Plants Group continued to survey the golf courses and identified an abundance of lizard orchid, marsh helleborine, dune fescue, cat's-tail grass, variegated horsetail, divided sedge, and sea bindweed - the latter three restricted to this one site (Berrow Dunes) in Somerset. Round-headed club-rush is also a plant of national importance, being restricted to Berrow Dunes and Braunton Burrows (North Devon).
