A seemingly simple pile of stones between holes 5 and 6 of the Woodside Course on Golf Sempach turns out, on closer inspection, to be a valuable habitat for numerous native animal species. The caves and crevices between the stones form a microclimatic protection system that compensates for fluctuations in temperature and humidity. The viper, which has made Hildisrieden its home, benefits from this protected retreat, as do many other inhabitants of the site, such as reptiles, insects, and small mammals.
