Sand scrapes have resulted in the development of dune heath

Royal Porthcawl

Wales

A series of new sand scrapes have been created over the past year at Royal Porthcawl Golf Club. These have been constructed in areas where coarse grasses had become dominant, outcompeting sensitive dune flora. Elsewhere around the golf course, sand scrapes have resulted in the development of dune heath, a rare habitat not only in the UK, but internationally.

These scrapes not only look beautiful and are much more pleasant to find errant golf balls, but they benefit a wide range of flora and fauna. Common lizards are often spotted basking nearby alongside butterflies such as common blue and small heath.
