Restoring wetlands to improve biodiversity

Golf Les Iles

Italy

Written by: Alessandro Leonardi

When Golf Les Iles was being designed a number of existing wetlands were included, at the time completely degraded and polluted due to illegal dumps. We realized the importance that these areas would have, both from the environmental and landscape point of view. In fact, the toponym "Les Iles" means wetlands.

A prime example of this is at hole 8, where we created a non-playing area that we leave completely untouched to increase biodiversity. The wetland habitats have also defined the landscape of the golf course. At the same time allowing us to minimise maintained turf areas.
