Restoring Ecosystems: Mussel Program

TPC Deere Run

United States

For the past five years, TPC Deere Run has been growing mussels in a controlled environment in the club’s irrigation lake. Then relocating them to regional waterways. The mussels play an essential ecological role in helping filter the waterway from algae, bacteria, and sediments. This project was spearheaded in conjunction with the efforts of a local energy company biologist. The biologists installed the breeding canisters using a wooden pallet and plastic totes. Solar-powered aerators were also installed in the irrigation lake. Before winter, the breeding pods are removed, and mussels are counted. Following this step, they are returned to the laboratory for incubation and relocated into waterways.
