Recycled stairs for troublesome bunkers

Al Mouj Golf

When Greg Norman designed Al Mouj Golf he followed the same bunkering concept as those on the great "Sandbelt" courses of southern Australia. These bunkers are very deep in areas, generally have limited entry and exit points and in some cases, the grass tongues are the actual means of entry. Unfortunately, not everybody is aware of this concept and we continually have issues with members and guests trying to exit bunkers by climbing steep faces and damaging the bunkers and liners.

As a lot of these steep faces are in play we could not use a hard material such as wood to create stairs to assist the golfers and reduce damage to the bunkers as there was a chance the ball would rebound back off the wood and injure the golfer. We have now started to recycle driving range mats to make easy access stairs for some of the bunkers. They are easy to install and remove for the tournaments and the golfers are enjoying a much easier exit from the bunker with no damage to the bunker or liner.
