The Strand Course has an existing area with Sand Martins. The Birds can be seen from March to October. The site is situated in an area where sand is extracted for golf course use. A Sand Martin likes to nest in steep banks where they excavate tunnels in sandy, dry vertical banks. Prior to the nesting season (before March) turf and plant material is removed on the top end of the steep banks. This keeps nest holes approachable and creates a better opportunity for new nests. Potential predators (like foxes) are also less likely to get to the nests by creating/maintaining a steeper bank.
