Protecting the Shoco Owl through new nest creation

Tierra del Sol Resort & Golf

Aruba

The Shoco Owl, Aruba's national animal, is an iconic symbol of the island. This burrowing owl species is unique to Aruba and has recently been classified as endangered due to habitat loss from ongoing development. Tierra del Sol has become a vital nesting ground for the Shoco, as the course’s open soil and sand areas provide ideal conditions for burrowing and nesting.

In collaboration with Aruba Bird Conservation, we’re working to establish safe nesting areas around the course. While we leave some natural areas undisturbed for the Shoco to build their own nests, our preferred approach is to construct artificial nests that offer protection from predators. Several of these artificial nests are already occupied by Shocos around the golf course.

Our long-term goal is to be recognised as a Shoco Sanctuary, using the course as a platform to educate members and visitors about this unique and fascinating species.
