Local beekeepers are partnering with the golf course, utilising the site to host their bee colonies. This collaboration not only enhances the heather areas around the course but also boosts the overall heather population. Heather, a vital component of heathland and moorland ecosystems, serves as a crucial nectar source for wild bees and other pollinators.
The nectar derived from heather, particularly Calluna vulgaris, contains a natural compound called callunene, which acts as a potent "bumblebee medicine," offering protection against harmful bee parasites. By foraging on heather, bees acquire these natural defenses, contributing to the resilience of bee populations.
In return for their services, beekeepers provide honey to the club, along with other health products crafted from beeswax. This mutually beneficial arrangement supports biodiversity conservation while promoting sustainable beekeeping practices.
