Planting mangroves on the course to sequester carbon

Protecting and restoring mangrove ecosystems is a key part of our commitment to sustainable development, particularly for coastal communities. Mangroves are renowned for their carbon storage capacity, capable of sequestering up to four times more carbon per hectare than tropical rainforests. Their dense biomass and deep root systems trap carbon-rich sediment for centuries, making them invaluable for long-term carbon retention and climate impact reduction.

At Iberostar Bávaro Golf Course, we are planting native mangroves around ponds and humid areas, not only to reduce our carbon footprint but also to stabilise shorelines, mitigate coastal erosion, and enhance our resilience to storms. These efforts create a natural barrier against extreme weather, while the mangroves' unique structure and lush foliage contribute to the scenic beauty of our course. Additionally, they provide important habitats for both migratory and resident birds, supporting local biodiversity and creating vibrant natural spaces on the course.

We involve tourists in our mangrove restoration efforts by inviting them to plant new seedlings and participate in guided educational sessions. This engagement offers a hands-on opportunity to learn about the ecological importance of mangroves and empowers visitors to share their knowledge.
