The piles of branches provide a habitat for amphibians and various mammals such as weasels, stoats, polecats and hedgehogs. But dead wood dwellers (beetles, bees, wasps and ants) and reptiles also live in piles of branches.
Branch piles can be both a wintering place, a place to sunbathe and hide, and a breeding chamber. Birds also like to use them as seat guards or even as a breeding ground.
