Jack’s Point Golf Club has implemented a comprehensive pest control programme aimed at reducing populations of ferrets, stoats, and hedgehogs, all of which pose a significant threat to native bird species by preying on their eggs and young. The programme includes regular servicing of traps, detailed mapping, and data recording to monitor effectiveness. This ensures traps can be relocated to the most strategic locations as needed for optimal results.
Since the introduction of these pest control measures, the populations of native birds, including the South Island Pied Oystercatcher and the Spur-winged Plover, have noticeably increased. These birds are vital to the local ecosystem. The South Island Pied Oystercatcher, with its striking black-and-white plumage and long orange beak, plays an important role in controlling invertebrate populations. Similarly, the Spur-winged Plover, with its loud, distinctive call and protective nesting behaviour, contributes to the vibrancy of the local birdlife.
