Natural drainage system gets the course open quicker after rain

Fife Golf Trust

We had a major issue at Dunnikier Golf Course with standing water on low lying fairways after heavy rainfall. The greens and tees were quickly playable, but the course had to remain closed because of waterlogging due to the heavy clay soil at our site. It was clear that the existing drainage pipes were not adequate to deal with this amount of rain so another solution had to be found.

We constructed an open ditch throughout the low lying areas whilst piping the middle of each fairway with a 300mm pipe to carry the water more quickly. Not only has this made the course playable much more often after rainfall events, but it has created new marginal wetland habitat which is hugely valuable to local biodiversity.
