Native tree planting with Auckland Council

Remuera Golf Club

New Zealand

Written by: Spencer Cooper

After the recent approval of an Environmental Enhancement Plan (which was developed in collaboration with Auckland Council) we started to plant native trees in carefully selected areas on the golf course. This planting is to replace exotic trees (Pine and Gum trees) that are coming to the end of their lifespan, to maintain the integrity of the playing corridors, and most importantly, to improve habitat.

For two years in preparation, we have conducted pest control (for Brushtail Possums and European Rabbits) to reduce pests that feed on vulnerable native plant species as well as removing other pest plants and exotic species. The new trees were carefully sourced from our local Māori (Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei) Iwi who operate a nursery nearby and new species have been planted that are not found on the course until now. This will help to improve the course not only from a maintenance point of view but also greatly increase our rare and vulnerable native New Zealand bird and insect life.
