In July 2020 the club purchased four of John Deere’s innovative new 7500A e-cut fairway mowers from local supplier Johnston Gilpen & Company. These machines were the first on the market to introduce hybrid electric cutting reel technology.

The 5 cutting units are powered by a 48 Volt smart alternator combined with its 37hp (2600rpm) turbo-charged diesel engine. The operator not only benefits from a vast reduction in noise in comparison to other hydraulic models but depending upon conditions and usage, also benefits from a reduction of around 30% in fuel costs and subsequent carbon savings.

On the back of how efficient and effective the fairway mowers are, in September 2021 Royal County Down invested in a 2750e greens triplex. Using the same technology, this green mower was able to provide an excellent precision cut with the same operator and financial benefits as its larger counterpart.
