Due to a limitation in irrigation water availability across Dubai, we have undertaken an irrigation audit of the Fire Golf Course. The design of the course is similar to that of healthland or inland links and uses the native grass species Sporobulus spicatus as the predominant plant outside of the turf grass corridor.
While these two grass types have independent irrigation coverage, there has been an amount of overspray which has allowed the more dominant bermudagrass to creep into the native grass which has resulted in wider-than-design turf corridors and higher associated costs of maintenance. In 2018 we aligned the turf corridor sprinklers to irrigate head to head and reduced the native areas significantly. To do this effectively the wiring of all sprinklers was revised and a 14% reduction in consumption was achieved over the summer months.
