Invasive tree mallow removal at Dunbar Golf Club

Dunbar Golf Club

Scotland

Written by: Paul Armour

Dunbar Golf Club has worked with local volunteers to remove invasive tree mallow from the coastline. Tree mallow is a plant normally found growing in Atlantic and Mediterranean coastal areas. In Britain, it can be found on the southwest coasts of England and Wales but it is an alien species here in East Lothian.

On local islands, including Craigleith and Fidra, tree mallow has historically led to a dramatic decline in puffin populations due it covering the majority of the land used by burrowing puffins. It is important to control this plant in the local area to reduce its vigour and potential to expand again in the future.
