Introducing beehives to support biodiversity

Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club

Written by: Bill Ralston

In 2024, Shaughnessy Golf Course introduced bee apiaries to its property. Three honey bee habitats were established near naturalized areas to help increase pollinator plant populations and enhance wildlife habitats in non-playing areas of the course. The goal of this initiative is to foster biodiverse ecosystems and create welcoming environments for insects, animals, and birds. A member of the Shaughnessy Course & Grounds team is responsible for the weekly maintenance of the bee colonies.

Seasonal honey production from the hives will be distributed to the Shaughnessy membership, and beeswax will be transformed into organic candles. Beyond its ecological impact, the beekeeping project serves as a communication tool to demonstrate the harmonious relationship between nature and golf. It highlights how sustainable practices can be seamlessly integrated into the golf course environment, promoting positive environmental outcomes with minimal disruption to playing conditions.
