Integrating nature into golf course design

Pickala Rock

Finland

This year, we’ve been constructing a golf course in Pickala, Finland, with a design philosophy focused on minimising the impact on the natural environment from the very beginning. The designer has intentionally incorporated areas of meadow and kuntta (a ground cover similar to heather) to restore natural landscapes within the course.

The meadow, covering 2 hectares, has been seeded with a pure fescue mix, promoting a more natural, low-maintenance environment. Meanwhile, the kuntta areas span 1 hectare and are strategically placed around the tees, forest edges, and even near bunkers close to the greens. Kuntta is a layer of old forest ground cover, rich in biodiversity, and includes species such as blueberries, lingonberries, and heather.

These kuntta areas not only enhance the aesthetic and natural feel of the course but also contribute significantly to local biodiversity, providing habitats for insects and pollinators. By integrating native plants and preserving natural ecosystems, we are helping to support local wildlife while creating a sustainable, environmentally friendly golfing experience.
