Increasing wildlife diversity utilising refugia

Earlier this year, in collaboration with HIWARG (Hampshire and Isle of Wight Amphibian and Reptile Group), we established reptile refugia throughout our golf course. Recent surveys have revealed a remarkable surge in wildlife diversity across the area. Notably, we discovered a slow worm and a sub-adult grass snake, the latter found nestled amidst a vibrant heather patch. Additionally, our keen observers spotted orange-tip butterflies fluttering about, encountered short-tailed voles scurrying through the landscape, and even stumbled upon a sizable toad situated beneath one of our refugia structures.

These findings demonstrate the positive impact our conservation efforts have had on local fauna, fostering a thriving habitat for various species to flourish. We are delighted to witness the growing presence of diverse wildlife on our course and remain committed to preserving and enhancing the natural environment.
