Raising the water level in our ponds has proven to be a transformative step, enhancing both the aesthetics and functionality of the course. The increased water levels have improved the visual appeal of the landscape, creating a more inviting environment for members and visitors. Beyond aesthetics, this adjustment has provided a vital resource for irrigation during dry periods, ensuring the course remains lush and well-maintained throughout the seasons.
Ecologically, the benefits have been fantastic. Maintaining an optimal water level discourages algae growth, prevents water stagnation, and fosters a thriving, biodiverse ecosystem. Aquatic plants now flourish, creating habitats that support a wide array of wildlife. Shortly after the water levels were adjusted, we observed a notable increase in the diversity of seabirds nesting and resting around the ponds.
One particularly development has been the nesting of the Common Goldeneye (Bucephala clangula), a species that has chosen natural tree hollows around two of the ponds as its nesting site. This highlights the role our ponds now play as a sanctuary for both resident and migratory birds.
