Heathland development at Sherwood Forest Golf Club

Sherwood Forest Golf Club

England

SFGC is a long-established heathland course which is located within the legendary Sherwood Forest. We are proud of our reputation as one of the oldest and finest heathland golf courses in Great Britain, the heathland flora primarily consisting of heather (Calluna vulgaris), heath (Erica species) and gorse (Ulex species).

Unfortunately, year after year, large areas of the heathland are slowly being lost to scrub. Scrub is the collective term for a variety of small trees and shrubs. If open ground is left to colonise, then scrub will occur naturally before the area reaches its climax vegetation cover, usually woodland.

Scrub species vary according to their habitat, dependent mainly on soil and moisture conditions. On heathland, silver birch, Scots pine, gorse, Scotch broom and oak may be present. Diligent removal/control of blooming plants is performed to prevent new seed production, and gradually deplete the seed bank.
