In de aanloop naar de 100ste editie van het Dutch Open heeft het greenkeepingteam op The International o.l.v. Tom Maddison werk gemaakt van het terugdringen van straatgras. Met name op de fairways was het aandeel straatgras in de grasmat te hoog om constante speelkwaliteit te kunnen garanderen. Om de speelkwaliteit van straatgras acceptabel te houden, is een hoge input aan bemesting en beregening noodzakelijk. Dit gaat niet goed samen met de gewenste fairwaygrassen die juist gedijen bij schralere omstandigheden. De extreem droge omstandigheden in 2018 en 2019 waren in dit verband een zegen. Door een nauwkeurig beregenings- en bemestingsregime te volgen, wist hoofdgreenkeeper Tom het Engels Raaigras een concurrentievoordeel op straatgras te geven. Het aandeel straatgras is door deze aanpak tot onder de 10% gedaald. Dit biedt uitstekende kansen om de fairways in topconditie te brengen voor de tourspelers die in de tweede week van september te gast zijn.

In the run-up to the 100th edition of the Dutch Open, the greenkeeping team at The International, under the supervision of Tom Maddison, has made efforts to reduce Poa Annua. Particularly on the fairways, the share of Poa in the turf had become too high to be able to guarantee consistent playing quality.
To keep the playing quality of Poa acceptable, a high input of fertilization and irrigation is required. This does not go well with the desired fairway grasses that thrive in poor conditions. The dry weather conditions in 2018 and in 2019 were a blessing in this regard. By following a precise irrigation and fertilization regime, Head-Greenkeeper Tom managed to give the Lolium Perenne a competitive advantage on Poa. This approach has reduced the share of Poa to below 10%. This offers excellent opportunities to bring the fairways in top condition for the tour players who are guests in the second week of September.
