Cutting high rough in two phases to minimise ecosystem impact

Carton House Golf Club

Ireland

This year we are cutting the high rough in two phases. The aim is to cut the entirety of the high rough with the least possible impact on its ecosystem. Instead of cutting a whole area completely, we are leaving up to half of it uncut. The uncut islands will continue to provide food and shelter for insects and grassland birds like the song thrush. We will return to cut the islands in a few weeks’ time when the surrounding rough has regenerated.

The surrounding area will then provide a corridor to healthy plant material for insects that are still in the newly cut area. If we cut the high rough in one sweep its ecosystem will be greatly knocked back. There would be a long period before it built back up. By cutting in two phases it will help to keep the habitat going continuously and give the ecosystem a better foothold to bounce back.
