Creation of Sanctuary Areas in the Aquatic Environment

Dom Pedro Laguna Golf Course

Portugal

The lakes on the golf course have been naturalised at the margins to create a large amount of habitat for the abundant birdlife around the golf course. There is a particular focus of this bird life on the lower holes of the course. The management and maintenance of these lakes are very minimal to avoid disturbance to the wildlife and aquatic ecosystem. The reed vegetation provides a well-suited habitat for local birds such as Mallard, Coot and Moorhen, and the lakes have been well populated by fish and other amphibian life. A lot of the marginal habitat mimics the local environment parks natural features to essentially extend these areas.
