2024
During the winter of 2022/2023, an initiative was undertaken to establish a breeding site for the red-listed sand martin. A vertical sand slope was constructed between holes 16 and 17, following discussions with the municipal ecologist, who determined this location and direction to be ideal for the project. We were delighted to observe sand martins settling into their new home with us in early 2023.
Sand martins typically reside in colonies ranging from a few to several hundred pairs, constructing their nests by burrowing into vertical surfaces. With fewer exposed sand faces available, many of which are now sloping rather than vertical, efforts to provide suitable breeding habitats are increasingly important for their conservation.
