Conservation of the rare sand lizard through sandy waste areas

The sand lizard, one of the UK's rarest reptiles, thrives in sandy heathland and dune habitats, frequently basking on exposed sand patches.

Unfortunately, the destruction of their natural habitat has significantly restricted their distribution to a few sites, increasing the pressure on their survival and rendering them more vulnerable to stress.

At Royal St David's, we have collaborated with Natural Resources Wales to initiate habitat restoration, opening up sandy areas to establish suitable habitats for sand lizards, mining bees, and other species. Through our efforts, we aim to witness a revival in the sand lizard population over the next few years.
