Ancient woodland within a historic landscape

The Royal Burgess Golfing Society Of Edinburgh

Scotland

Golf was first played by the Society at the current location in Barnton, Edinburgh in 1895 after over a century and a half of play at Bruntsfield Links and Musselburgh. The Willie Park Jnr designed course is situated within the historic landscape of the now demolished Barnton House and contains several areas of Ancient Woodland. This beautiful parkland course has been planted with a large variety of trees including some fine specimen examples.

A tree inventory in 2017/18 identified 64 different tree species. Since the Millennium there has been a focus on tree planting and a woodland management plan is in place with the support of an expert arboriculturalist to create further visual interest and increase the biodiversity and woodland habitat in the enclosed urban surroundings. Nest boxes were also installed with support from the Scottish Wildlife Trust.
