An ecosystem of wood and leaves

Golf Sempach

Switzerland

For years, the deadwood hedge at the edge of the Woodside Course on Golf Sempach has provided a valuable habitat for numerous animal species. What appears "untidy" at first glance is in fact a deliberately created, living micro-ecosystem. This is because the rotting process of wood and leaves generates heat, creating a humid microclimate that provides food and protection. Insects, fungi, birds, and amphibians benefit from this in equal measure - whether as a nesting place, hibernation site, or year-round habitat.
