Hunley Hotel & Golf Club

England

Written by: GEO Foundation

Hunley Hotel and Golf Course held an agronomy and ecology education day for the Royal and Ancient Greenkeeping Scholars. The day consisted of an introduction and presentations from Steve Isaac, R&A Director of Sustainability; Wendy Cole, Manager of the Scholarship programme; James Hutchinson, BIGGA Ecologist and Greg Fitzmaurice, Courses Manager at Hunley. Topics covered included the history of the course, how it’s managed holistically and the benefits to golf and nature before we then headed out to look at the actual courses and their respective projects. The scholars were given information on the management of a 27-hole site, how to create corridors for wildlife, why woodlands should be managed for both golf and fauna, bird identification and the USP (Unique Selling Point) of views. Once the education was complete, the scholars held their yearly golf tournament which was won by none other than Hunley’s Courses Manager, Greg Fitzmaurice - Who said local knowledge doesn’t count!
