In 2017, we began working with Bionema to control chafer grub infestation with the use of nematodes instead of using pesticides. The process involves mixing the nematode (Heterorhabditis Bacteriophora) soluble powder with a penetrant wetting agent and spraying/injecting it on the turf. Heavy rainfall/irrigation is required behind to allow the nematode to move through the soil and attack the grub. The nematode will them reproduce inside the grub and then eat its way back out.

During Chafer beetle hatching season in June, we put out traps using pheromone lure to trap and prevent the beetle from laying eggs on the turf areas. Since undertaking the Nematode applications we have seen a 100% reduction in grub presence in applied areas. We have also been able to be insecticide-free since starting the applications and animal damage in these areas have significantly reduced.
