On April 17th, I, Guido Hamelink, have visited the golf course for an audit.

Geijsteren’s golf course was built in 1975. The first 9-holes were designed by Frank Pennink and the second 9-holes by Donald Steel. The terrain is located on a high bedding of the Maas River. The soil consists of high, dry and nutrient-poor sand with pebbles. Small brooks stream into the Maas.
The origin of the terrain dates back to the turn of the previous century when current woodland was still uncultivated land. The current terrain was created by planting high yield woodland with coarse pine trees meant as buttresses for the mines.
The terrain can be divided into two areas: the northern and the southern area. The northern area is of inherently dry and nutrient-average soil. The oak is the best wood type for this habitat.
The southern area contains an increased (locally) moist and nutrient-poor soil. Original vegetation is absent due to the land’s agricultural function prior to construction of the golf course.
Golfbaan Geijsteren is in 1975 aangelegd waarbij de eerste negen holes zijn ontworpen door Frank Pennink en de tweede negen door Donald Steel. De golfbaan Geijsteren ligt op een hoog Maasterras dat bestaat uit hoge, droge en arme zandgronden met grind waarbij beekjes afvoeren naar de Maas.
Voordat het golfterrein in 1975 werd aangelegd, is begin deze eeuw het gebied ontgonnen van woeste grond (heide) naar landbouwgrond en bos. De bosaanleg bestond uit de aanplant van productiebos met grove dennen, bedoeld als stuthout voor de mijnen.
Het gebied is op te delen in twee delen: het noordelijke en zuidelijke gebied. Het noordelijke gebied is van nature een droog- en matig voedselarm gebied. Het bostype wat zich hier het best manifesteert is dat van de eikenklasse.
Het zuidelijke gebied is van natuur (plaatselijk) vochtiger en verder vooral erg voedselarm. Bostype van de eiken- berkenklasse is hier meer van toepassing. Van oorspronkelijke begroeiing is hier geen sprake door de landbouwfunctie die er voor de aanleg van de golfbaan is geweest.

These turfgrasses are optimal for the circumstances at this club because:
Poa annua is not optimal so we are working on a different composition. Because Agrostis and Fescue are more drought resistant, less susceptible to diseases and need less fertilizer. Agrostis and fescue species are optimal and we are trying to get a higher percentage of these species into greens and tees. So, sustainable management.

This golf facility is making the following efforts to manage the playing quality expectations of customers:

The manner of maintenance has been established in a contract. The contractor discusses further planning of details during regular meetings.
|Promoting the playing quality values of more naturalized turf, particularly fairways and semi-rough||Member support is sought by communicating about both the maintenance issues and the reasoning behind the choices being made. Members also seek direct contact with green-keeping or the commission if concerned about a specific situation like dry areas on the course.

|Minimizing the amount of amenity grass||The surface intensively mowed grass is kept to a minimum. By determining which elements fall outside the game and which are of importance to the character of the natural landscape, only some elements need to be extensively mowed.
|Connection of internal habitat patches||The nature management plan is aimed at optimising the biodiversity. A part of this includes connecting plant squares, brushwood and water elements.
|Connection of patches with external habitats||A keen inventory of natural elements both on the course and in its neighbouring landscape allows for improved management and maintenance. For instance, equal goal setting of natural elements on and outside the course can take place.
|Creation of habitat corridors||The golf course is not located in a national natural ecological corridor. However, connection to and continuity with bordering terrain is actively sought after.

This golf facility is undertaking the following activities to conserve and enhance biodiversity on the golf course:

The base of the golf course is located between 17.5 and 19.5 metres + NAP. The groundwater level depends on the location on the golf course. The groundwater level in the northern area is located between 1 and 4 metres beneath surface level. The groundwater level of the southern area is located between 0.6 and 1.5 metres below surface level. Groundwater levels are also supplemented artificially in order to ensure that there is enough water for the irrigation of surrounding farmlands.
The irrigation system has been recently renovated to increase its efficiency and reduce the amount of leakages. The use of irrigation water is inherently related to the amount of precipitation, evaporation and other factors. All these factors are taken into account in the application of the amount of water needed for irrigation.
De bodem op de golfbaan is gelegen tussen de 17,5 en 19,5 m. + NAP. De grondwaterstand is afhankelijk van de locatie in de baan. In het noordelijke deel ligt de grondwaterspiegel tussen de 1 en 4 meter beneden maaiveld. In het zuidelijke deel is het grondwaterspiegel tussen de 0.6 en 1.5 m. beneden maaiveld. De grondwaterstand wordt hier ook kunstmatig opgevoerd om de landbouwgronden in de omgeving voldoende vocht toe te dienen.
Recentelijk is het irrigatiesysteem aangepast waardoor er op meer efficiente wijze kan worden beregend en het aantal lekkages sterk is verminderd. Het gebruik van beregeningswater hangt vanzelfsprekend sterk samen met neerslag, verdamping en andere factoren. Hiermee wordt dan ook rekening gehouden in de hoeveelheden die worden toegepast.

The golf club has taken various energy-saving measures over the past years in order to minimise its usage. The clubhouse uses energy-saving lamps and was installed with a new, efficient boiler. Investment in the course included an improved irrigation system in 2009.

The restaurant facility is outsourced to a third party with whom the club has a contract. The contract stipulates a yearly meeting to determine the prices. A functioning review takes place every two years. It is possible to eat at the restaurant as well as having drinks.

Golf Club Geijsteren aims to minimise the overall environmental impact resulting from its activities. The products used for golf course maintenance play an important role herein. The application of pesticides is kept at a minimum and will only be used if the quality of the game elements is at risk as a result of harmful insects or fungi.

Belangrijk onderdeel hiervan is het onderhoud van de golfbaan en de stoffen die hierbij gebruikt worden. Zo wordt het toepassen van bestrijdingsmiddelen beperkt tot een minimum en worden deze alleen ingezet wanneer er het risico is dat spelelementen sterk in kwaliteit achteruit zullen gaan door schadelijke insecten of schimmels.

Golf Club Geijsteren is a members-only club. Despite its closed character, the club is highly committed to collaborating with its surroundings whenever needed. Communication with club members occurs through the use of the website, club newsletter and posters in the clubhouse.
