The Golf Club Driene, founded in 1993, plays on one of the oldest golf courses of the Netherlands. This 9-hole course was constructed to the south of the city of Hengelo for the Twentsche Golf Club in 1926. A short-game course was added on former farmland in 2014. The majority of the grounds lie within the Hengelo municipality and a small part just protrudes into the Enschede municipality. Golfclub Driene is gelegen tussen Hengelo en Enschede. De baan ligt aan de zuidzijde van een uitgestrekt bosgebied. De Drienerbeek stroomt van oost naar west over de baan en watert af in het Koppel Kanaal. De golfbaan bestaat uit halfopen landschap en is in eigendom van Landgoed de Belder. De eerste aanleg van de baan is in 1926 uitgevoerd in een kleinschalig agrarisch landschap, het oude hoeven en essen-landschap. Doelstelling is het duurzaam in stand houden en waar mogelijk versterken van een aantrekkelijke natuurlijke en afwisselende omgeving om de golfsport te beoefenen. Er is een breed scala aan wilde planten gedetermineerd die voorkomen in biotopen als bosranden, slootkanten, oevers van poel, vijver en beek, ruigt en weide.

The golf course at Golf Club Driene is located between Hengelo and Enschede. The southern part of the golf course is located along large, mixed woodlands. A small stream, the Drienerbeek, crosses the site from East to West and ends up in the Koppel Canal. The golf course is comprised of half open landscape and is owned by Landgoed de Belder. The course was constructed in 1926 in an existing agricultural landscape, the so called oude hoeven and essen-landscape. Our goal is to preserve nature in a sustainable way while simultaneously enhancing the natural elements to create a varied environment allowing the game of golf. A broad range of wild plant species have been observed in the various biotopes, such as along the edges of the woods, ditches, pool banks, ponds and brooks, and in brushwood and meadows.

Discreet on-course signage and furniture Placement of relevant course facilities, furniture and signage will be determined in large part in discussion between the Course and Rules committees.
Conservation of specimen trees Forms part of the overall woods/forest strategy. The quality of ancient trees are monitored within the scope of the VTA, and decisions on replacement are taken to a large degree on the grounds of safety and esthetics. To obtain an optimal overview of tree growth around the fairways, 3D digital scanning is in progress. In this way an optimal on-line register is created in which all hedges and trees are exactly recorded within an overall landscape plan (BBBP).
Screening and softening unsightly man-made features Golfcourse elements such as course facilities, driving range, greenkeepers facility, seats and catering areas are matched as far as possible in a uniform dark green colour to ensure unity and restfulness to the eye. Care is taken in the design and architecture of these facilities to ensure this unifying effect.

Minimizing the amount of amenity grass The surface area of tees, greens and fairways form the intensely cultivated area of the golfcourse.
Increasing the size of habitat patches The semi-roughs and roughs are in fact nutrient-poor grass areas. Hedges and dry barriers (houtwallen) are (re-)constructed when considered appropriate.

Beregening van tees en greens vindt plaats met oppervlaktewater. De vijver wordt aangevuld met grondwater d.m.v. een pomp. Chemische en bacteriologische wateranalyse van het vijverwater (in- en uitgang) is in voorbereiding. Met Waterschap Vechtstromen is een verbruikshoeveelheid afgesproken. Vergunningvrij mag er max 10m3 per uur onttrokken worden. Een watermeter voor de volume voor beregening is recent geïnstalleerd. Hiermee zullen gebruiksgegevens in 2017 worden verzameld. Voor een optimale infiltratie wordt de beregening 's nachts uitgevoerd. Voor de verschillende accommodaties wordt van leidingwater gebruik gemaakt. Er zijn tijdens de verbouwing van het clubhuis (2007) diverse maatregelen genomen om een besparing te realiseren.

The water used for irrigation of the greens and tees is mainly surface water. The ponds are supplemented with groundwater through a pump. A water usage agreement has been made with the Water Board Vechtstromen. License free may max 10m3 per uur be withdrawn. A waterconsumption meter has been installed recently. Consumptiondata for irrigation will be collected in 2017. Chemical and microbiological analyses of the in- and output are in preparation. A meter for sprinkler volumes will be installed. Watering takes place at night in order to achieve optimal infiltration. The different accommodations make use of tap water. Various water-saving measures have been taken since the renovation of the clubhouse in 2007.

Het verbruik van gas is vooral toe te schrijven aan het verwarmen van het clubgebouw, de golfshop en de greenkeepers accommodatie.Sinds de verbouwing in 2007 van het clubgebouw veel aandacht is geschonken aan besparingsmogelijkheden voor gas, elektra en water. Voorbeelden zijn geïsoleerde leidingen, een HR-ketel, tijdafgestelde kranen, schakelsensoren en energiezuinige verlichting. Verder is een groot aantal lockerruimtes gerealiseerd waardoor het mogelijk is met de fiets naar de golfbaan te komen. Een nieuwe studie van energie verbruik geeft ook mogelijkheden zowel voor reductie in gebruik maar ook ideeën voor andere methoden voor stroomgeneratie. In 2016 is een nieuwe loods geplaatst voor het opbergen van lockers en golfbuggy's. Het plaatsen van zonnepanelen op het betreffende dak wordt momenteel onderzocht. Een systeem voor een zonneboiler wordt onderzocht in een meerjarig energieplan. Dubbele ramen zijn in het clubhuis geplaatst in 2014/15.

Energy (gas) usage can be accounted for by the heating of the clubhouse, the golf shop and the maintenance facility. Since the renovation of the clubhouse in 2007 special attention has been placed on energy-saving measures concerning gas, electricity and water usage. Examples include insulated pipes, a HR boiler, time-adjusted valves, energy-saving bulbs and the installation of sensory switches. Furthermore, new locker rooms were built with an enlarged capacity in order to encourage the use of bicycles. A new energy study/audit currently underway suggests both additional ways to reduce energy costs and also raises possibilities for renewable energy generation. In 2016 a new facility for lockers and parking of golfbuggies was built; the installation of solar panels is now under study. The placement of a solar water heater forms part of a multi-annual energy plan. Double glazing has been installed in the clubhouse in 2014.

Supply Chain

Bij Golfclub Driene is aandacht voor materiaal en ketenbeheer zowel in de horeca als in baan management,.
De horeca wordt uitgevoerd door DHr Ari Bijkerk. Hij pacht de horeca-faciliteiten in het clubhuis van de club. Door deze samenwerking is deze partij een belangrijke schakel op het gebied van duurzaam inkopen.
Er wordt weinig gebruikt gemaakt van gewasbeschermingsmiddelen in de baan. Reden hiervoor is de constante kwaliteit van de al oude spelelementen (greens). Door deels mechanisch onkruid te verwijderen kan er bovendien worden bespaard op het gebruik van herbiciden.
Het afval dat vrijkomt bij greenkeeping en horeca wordt zoveel mogelijk gescheiden aangeboden. Hierdoor kan er een groot deel worden gerecycled bij het afvalverwerkingsbedrijf en besparen op de inzameling van restafval.

Supply chain management and purchasing are main areas of interest at Golf Club Drieneboth in the catering and course management.
The restaurant and catering activity is outsourced to Mr. Ari Bijkerk, who uses the clubhouse facilities. Therefore, this party is an important link in the area of durable purchasing.
Little use is made of pesticides on the course. The reason is that the greens are old, yet of a consistent quality. By performing weed control mechanically, a further reduction of chemical products is realised. A large proportion of waste from the restaurant and green-keeping is separated and then recycled externally. This approach also saves on costs of waste collection.

Selection on the least toxic and lest persistent products Actively monitor pesticides (literature), their activity and resistance. Selection as a result of experience and consultation.

Activity Description
Separation of recyclable materials Ambition is to separate as many different wastestreams as possible for recycle. Examples are plastic, paper, glass, house waste and green waste. This is an ongoing discussion with the waste disposal company.
Establishment of recycling centers Various containers are located centrally in order to separate waste materials. Waste bins are available on the course.
Returning clipping to fairways and walkways Some clippings are recycled, some left on the fairways. Cut wood and branches may be left in the woods for use by wildlife.
Education of staff and customer education Staff and members are informed regarding waste removal and disposal.
Waste awareness campaigns The importance of waste management and separation/recycling will be emphasised to golfclub members.

Pollution Control

Voor de golfclub zijn de uitgangspunten voor milieuzorg de bepalingen als geformuleerd in de wet milieubeheer en het natuurbeheerplan. Ter voorkoming van verontreiniging zijn diverse maatregelen getroffen. Denk hier aan vloeistofdichte vloeren in de werkplaats, een olie- en vetafscheider bij de afspuitplaats, maar ook maatregelen als een energiezuinige koeling en vetvangput voor de horeca. T.b.v. greenkeeping is een nieuwe dubbelwandige dieseltank van 1500 Lt geplaatst (KIWA keurmerk) en de oude tank is volgens de regels afgevoerd (zie afvoercertificaat). Een milieuzorgplan is opgesteld in januari 2017 (bijlage). Voor irrigatie wordt zuiver bronwater gebruikt dat via een overloopvijver wordt benut.

The golf club uses the criteria for environmental care as formulated by government legislation as its starting point. Various measures have been taken in order to prevent pollution. These include the installation of liquid-sealed floors in the workplace, the use of an oil- and grease separator in the hose-down area, and also the installation of an environmentally-friendly cooling and fat collection/separation in the kitchen. On behalf of the greenkeeping a new double-walled diesel tank (1500 Lt, KIWA certified) is installed; the old one had been removed in accordance with the applicable rules (see: waste certificate). A environmental management plan has been prepared in january 2017 (see attachment).
Some regards with respect to analyses of pesticides
Any analysis of drained water on pesticides is not considered as meaningful deemed by the experts in this area (a.o. representatives of the Waterschap Vechtstromen). Analysis of the three potential hazardous components present in Chipco (iprodion, Bayer) and Primstar (florasulam, fluroxypyr en fluroxypyrmeptyl, Bayer) can only be performed by LC-MS analyses. The concentrations measured are with great certainty below the detection levels. This implies a high probability of false positive and false negative results, respectively.
Dependent on the local groundwater level water is flowing from the brooks or vice versa. This refers not only to the Drienerbeek but also to the brooks of the adjacent agriculture land. Sampling (Where? How? At what point?) will only give a snapshot and, therefore, will only increase the false security.

Visual and chemical analyses of surface and ground water. Further explanation (2) Visual and chemical analyses of the sampled pond water used for irrigation is under consideration. Although the relevance with respect to pollution control is not high, we are interested to gain some knowledge by monitoring trace elements, a.o. calcium, phosphates, potassium, iron and nitrates. We have contacted the environmental laboratory Aqualysis, which also works for the Waterboard, for assistance in this matter.

Een actieve club website geeft verdere communicatie mogelijkheden en wanneer nodig zijn mediacontacten onderhouden. The locatie ligt behoorlijk geisoleerd op de buitenkant van Hengelo.
